Instant replay isn’t just a fan experience feature. Coaching staffs increasingly use in-venue replay for real-time player feedback and film review that a static scoreboard has no way to provide.

A common assumption is that a video board, being more technically complex, must also be more failure-prone and harder to maintain than a traditional scoreboard. Traditional electromechanical scoreboards have their own wear items: incandescent or older-style bulbs, relays, and mechanical digit displays that degrade with weather exposure and repeated on/off cycling over a season. What does change with a video board is the stakes of a failure. A scoreboard going dark mid-game is an inconvenience the referees and both benches can work around with a handheld clock.
